Hails and Ales Club

Release of the Week

Usually these posts go up a bit later in the week, after I’ve had time to give a few spins to carious releases but not this week! Whilst this approach may mean I miss out on giving the award to some albums that may be slower to reveal their secrets and grow on me over time, it doesn’t really matter. That’s because there was only one winner this week. The return of Pissgrave.

The Pennsylvania four piece are a revered name in the death metal scene, understandably so, and they’re back with their third full length album, and first since 2019. The record, ‘Malignant Worthlessness’ absolutely blasts out of the traps. No setting the scene, no slow build. Just an absolute pummelling from the second you press play.

Memorable melodies in death metal? You bet. This is skilfully crafted whilst also managing to be a brutal 31 minute beatdown. Verging on the grind side of death metal but without ever losing their old school edge, this is a band and album that all who worship of the altar of extremity should at least check out and hey, if you don’t like it, at least Pissgrave is a fun name.

Hails!
