Hails and Ales Club

Albums of the Year 1990 - as chosen by users of the Fediverse.

1990 was an interesting time in music, especially metal. Alternative rock was big, grunge was just kicking off properly and a lot of the big metal and thrash bands were having an identity crisis, yet the underground was thriving. I say all this with hindsight rather than experience however because 1990 was also the year I was born.

For that reason I chose 1990 as the first year in a new series of posts asking fellow users of the Fediverse (Mastodon, Pixelfed, GoToSocial etc) what their favourite albums are from a particular year. This isn’t a definitive list but it started a good, fun conversation so I thought I’d document it here.

The album with the most votes, which was pleasing for me as it was also my choice, was Painkiller by Judas Priest.

There were a few other albums that received multiple nominations too. Rust in Peace by Megadeth and Cowboys from Hell by Pantera were joint second place which were followed by a joint third place of the following albums:

Left Hand Path by Entombed
Strap it On by Helmet
Facelift by Alice in Chains
Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy
Violator by Depeche Mode

Whilst these were the albums that got more than one submission, there were plenty of other albums that people chose which highlights the diverse and interesting taste we have. Here is a list of some of the other albums that were selected:

Cause of Death by Obituary
Coma of Souls by Kreator
The La’s by The La’s
1990 by Daniel Johnson
Goo by Sonic Youth
Apple by Mother Love Bone
Eye by Robyn Hitchcock
People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest
Heavenward by HUM
Elizium by Fields of the Nephilim
Jordan: The Comeback by Prefab Sprout
Tales from the Twilight World by Blind Guardian
Frizzle Fry by Primus
Remain Sedate by Rorschach
Kreuzzug ins Glück by Die toten Hosen

Some great albums in there and also a bunch I’ve never heard so I guess I’ve got some homework to do. My only real complaint is that nobody picked Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer but as I didn’t pick it myself, I can’t grumble too much.

So what do you think? If you didn’t pick one, what would you have chosen? Also importantly, what year should we do next?
